Hi! I am a seismologist and geophysicist, and in my research, I use spatio-temporal patterns and source properties of microseismicity to understand how fluids flow, trickle, or gush in faults and volcanic systems.

I am working as a postdoc in the Seismology Laboratory of UC Santa Cruz, working with Emily Brodsky on the patterns of seismicity of classical and low-frequency earthquakes on the San Andreas fault and beyond.

I recently defended my PhD thesis at the Institut de physique du globe de Paris, under the supervision of Claude Jaupart and Nikolai Shapiro.

Research and project interests

  • The architecture, dynamics and evolution of fluid circulation pathways in faults, volcanoes and glaciers
  • Seismic/accoustic signals as ways to understand minute geophysical processes
  • Numerical and experimental modeling to study all geophysical and planetary processes!

The fast, trans-crustal migrations of tremor detected by Cyril Journeau are evidence for how pressure travels through a 40-km-deep magmatic system, under the largest cluster of volcanoes in the world. Checkout the paper and animated catalog to see for yourself!

I talked about my PhD work on intermittent fluid transport in faults, and how its spatio-temporal patterns lead us to think that it could shape swarm-like seismic activity in faults. The recording can be found here, with subtitles.

We model the unsteady flow of fluid in permeable faults with elementary permeability valves distributed in a channel. As valves break open and heal in response to local pressure conditions, they produce bursts and migration of activity, similar to tremor observations in subduction zones. In there, we characterize the source properties of low-frequency earthquakes detected in Guerrero, Mexico. We find that, although their moment magnitude varies on orders of magnitude, their duration seems to be independent of it, displaying a characteristic scale. This could hint at a source process different from a classical earthquake rupture.
